The term “pre-med major” can be a little misleading as there is no such thing as majoring in pre-med when pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Pre-med actually refers to students planning to apply to medical school who are taking the related undergraduate course requirements.

What do premeds major in? When considering college majors, pre-meds can choose any field they’re passionate about, as medical school admissions committees accept students from diverse undergraduate backgrounds. 

That being said, prospective medical students should carefully select their pre-med courses with a focus on subjects like biology, psychology, and sociology. These topics are assessed on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), so you’ll need to know them well to excel on that very important exam.

1. Anthropology

Anthropology is not considered a traditional pre-med major. However, anthropology can provide a unique perspective on human behavior and culture, which can be valuable in many health professions.

An anthropology major encompasses the study of human societies and cultures from various angles. It explores customs, beliefs, social structures, human evolution, genetics, and language.

Even if students opt for a non-science major, they should keep in mind that completing the prerequisite courses for medical school is a crucial factor to consider while planning their academic schedule and extracurricular activities. 

I’ve talked to many students who feel that majoring in a non-traditional field of study was the best decision they ever made. Consider this when choosing electives.

The most common reasons I hear include pursuing interests while they had the time, learning about subjects that fulfilled lifelong curiosities, and preventing burnout by varying study topics beyond science. 

3. Biology

Biology aligns most closely with the traditional pre-med path due to its comprehensive coverage of specialized health sciences. As a biology major, you will also acquire valuable laboratory expertise needed in medical school.

Many universities provide options for both a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in psychology. I don’t recommend only one of these paths (both can be valuable), but it’s important to consider the full picture if you’re planning to apply to medical school.

A BS in Psychology usually emphasizes a science-oriented curriculum, concentrating on the technical and applied aspects of the field. This includes extensive training in the scientific method and statistics, often involving more laboratory work and research courses. 

Conversely, a BA in Psychology often offers a broader liberal arts education, encompassing additional general education courses and coursework in the social sciences or humanities. 

Both degrees can be suitable for aspiring medical students, but it’s essential to carefully consider prerequisites and customize your class schedule accordingly to meet medical school requirements.

6. English

English is not considered a traditional pre-medicine major, but it offers several benefits. English majors often develop strong communication and critical-thinking skills, which are essential for effective doctor-patient interactions and medical problem-solving.
